Brad

Brad Schiller is coming to The School of Tech Arts in April!!

With nearly 30 years’ experience in the lighting industry, we consider Brad Schiller to be an industry veteran. Brad has been involved with many types of productions including theatre, television, concerts, film, architectural, dance, and industrials.  Some of his projects include: The 1996 Academy Awards, The Capitol of Puerto Rico, The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and more!

In addition to his experience, Brad is the author of The Automated Lighting Programmer’s Handbook, published by Focal Press.  From basic principles of automated lighting, to pre-production preparations, the text details concepts, procedures, and guidelines to ensure a successful production.  The third edition was released in October 2016.

This is going to be a seminar to remember, and an opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry!

Follow along as Brad Schiller covers topics from The Automated Lighting Programmer’s Handbook. From setting up your console to building looks to advanced features such as networking, timecode, and remote triggering, Schiller will discuss the concepts and procedures that professional programmer’s need to know and understand. Primarily aimed and new and beginning programmer’s this course details programming principles regardless of console or fixture selection.

Video Seminar | Alan Carter, Video Director for NBC's The Voice | March 21-22

Alan Carter, Video Director for NBC’s The Voice will be joining us for the SOTA Live Video seminar. This will be a two-day seminar and packed with professional insight, practical practices, and hands-on training!

For the past 13 years, Alan has been one of the premiere “live” directors in television.  From specials such as The Screen Actors Guild Awards, The People’s Choice Awards, The CMT Music Awards and Miss America to the highly successful primetime reality series, The Voice. The Voice, currently in its 12th season, is the most popular live competition show in America and Alan has directed every episode. He has also directed some of the most popular Primetime game shows in history with 65 episodes of Deal Or No Deal and 80 episodes of Minute To Win It.

A two-time Emmy winner, he picked up his first gold statue as an editor in 1994 for his work on David Copperfield’s 15 Years of Magic on CBS.  Alan’s extensive background as an editor garnered him many honors and awards, especially for his work in the music video genre.  Alan’s regular music video clients included Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Aerosmith and Michael Jackson.  His second Emmy came for directing The Walt Disney World Christmas Parade.  This was one of Alan’s first directing jobs.

Audio Seminar | DPA Microphones Workshop | February 21

As one of the first miniature microphone developers, DPA Microphones has empowered originality and innovation throughout the entertainment industry. Their mini mics have paved the way for creative expression in the musical and theater industry. Soon after, these same mics conquered the film and TV industry with their honest sound and amazing flexibility.

DPA Microphone Workshop | Tuesday, February 21 | Gateway Church Southlake Campus

700 Blessed Way, Southlake, TX 76092 | 9:30am – 4:30pm

This workshop will be a basic introduction to condenser microphones and general DPA minis including:

  • Explanation about off-axis response and the importance of linearity
  • Introducing omni vs. directional microphones (pros and cons)
  • Placing the mics on and instruments and listening to the change according to placement.
  • Placing the mics on individual people and listening to changes in speech intelligibility according to placement
  • Myths, traditions and old habits are discussed in theory
  • Ground principles in most common used microphones | Condenser, Dynamic, Omni, and Cardioid

This seminar’s main purpose is to focus on different placement possibilities of microphones on an instrument and a person. Sessions will be recorded and played back for comparison and playing the instrument while placing the mics in various positions.

Audio Seminar with Ed Crippen

Learn from one of the top pros in audio system tuning! This two-day seminar will be held at Gateway Church’s North Fort Worth Campus: 4209 Basswood Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76137.

Ed Crippen has been helping Gateway Audio systems sound their best for the past several years. Ed is going to be with us to walk us through his process of system design, installation, tuning and troubleshooting issues. Ed’s primary role at Clark is to commission audio systems for new installs. He implements the sound design created in CAD drawings and oversees the alignment and optimization of that audio system in the actual environment. Ed also provides follow-up services for existing installs for Clark by re-tuning systems, troubleshooting, and repair of audio issues.

Ed is currently the senior audio engineer for Clark, has more than 20 years of touring experience, and spent 15 years working with GoLive productions and CTS audio out of Nashville, Tennessee. He has toured with Women of Faith as the primary FOH engineer coordinating their events in large scale sports arenas throughout the US, and with artists such as Stephen Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Point of Grace and more!

Live Video Seminar with Bob Ennis

SOTA Students along with other attendees will have the opportunity to learn from one of the true legends in the video production industry during this two-day seminar at Gateway Church’s North Fort Worth Campus: 4209 Basswood Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76137.

The Emmy Award-winning Ennis is currently the director of Wheel of Fortune. He also has helmed installments of such game shows as Family Feud and Supermarket Sweep and been a technical director on The Bold & The Beautiful, Hollywood Squares, The Price Is Right and The Young & the Restless.

DiGiCo Masters Series

DiGiCo / Group One Limited will be hosting two trainings days in Dallas, TX on Thursday 13th October 2016 @ Gateway Church – Grand Prairie Campus, 2404 North Carrier Parkway, Grand Prairie, TX, 75050

This training and overview series will provide attendees with a strong introduction to the DiGiCo mixing environment, whilst also ensuring topics such as system configuration and setup are covered. Multi-track playback and the ability to mix down to headphones will ensure plenty of hands-on time to put into practice what has been learnt throughout the day.

This is a great event for those interested in DiGiCo and what it has to offer as a mixing platform as well as those familiar with DiGiCo. With the release of StealthCore 2, new exciting tools are available throughout the SD-Series and what better way to explore these amazing new options than to join us, for what will be a great and informative day!
